John Cougar Mellencamp: "Pink Houses"

Here's a video, and song, from the 1980's that contains a story and a message. John Cougar Mellencamp's "Pink Houses," before he discarded the "Cougar" in his name. The messages about life and serious issues were one of the things I appreciated most about Mellencamp's work.  Liked that James Deanish "rebel" image he had.

  1. This song reminds me so much of Friday Night Videos, which is something I never wanted to miss, and if my friends or nieces (who were only a year and 2 years younger than me) were spending the night, I would force everyone to sit up and watch these videos. Loved all the music. Funny how everything is on YouTube now.

    1. Aunt Jackie- I liked a lot of John Mellencamp's work back in the '80s. He was part Bruce Springsteen (except more rural), part James Dean or "Easy Rider" (i.e. the rebel look), maybe part Jack Kerouac or the character in Salinger's "Catcher In The Rye." I wasn't into any of the cliques, not even the non-comformist rebel ones (i.e. punk, heavy metal, etc.), so Mellencamp's very individualistic message rang true with me.

  2. I loved this song so much too. I also enjoyed his cameo on SCTV. In Canada, we used to watch videos on Much Music. Jackie's right, watching videos is so much easier now. Would've loved to have YouTube as a kid. Back then you had to wait for countdowns etc. until the song you wanted popped up.
