'80s TV Movie Intros

Back in the late '70s and '80s, when there were only three big networks (ABC, NBC, and CBS), evening movies were a major staple of network television. Check out the amazing graphics from this ABC opening for its Sunday night movie. I remember this intro vividly from that era.

Heres the Intro for CBS' weekly Saturday Night movie. This Intro was used during the late '70s through the early '80s.  As you can see by both of the above openings, flashy graphics was big back then for movie intros. I guess the intent was build excitement for the movie about to be presented.

Of course, cable was also around at that time, but it was just beginning, and there were only a few channels. Here's a truly cool intro for the cable movie channel HBO.

  1. These are so great! Any idea how long the ABC Sunday Night Movie intro was around? I wasn't born until 1982 and I swear I remember this!

  2. Yeah, I remember all these from when I was little. I'm not sure when the particular ABC intro stopped being used, but it seemed to keep being used well into the '80s.

    According to Wikipedia:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_ABC_Sunday_Night_Movie

"The ABC Sunday Night Movie is a television program that aired on Sunday nights, first for a brief time in 1962 under the title Hollywood Special (although Time magazine lists this version as The Sunday Night Movie). It then began airing regularly under its more commonly known title from 1964 to 1998, on ABC. From 2004 on, it has aired sporadically as a special program, now titled "ABC Sunday Movie of the Week".
